The Little Traveler...

We couldn't wait to take Caleb on his first vacation / road trip, however the circumstances of this trip weren't what we had in mind. John's father suddenly passed away Sunday, September 30th. So we immediately loaded up the car with as much as we could & made the 18 hour drive North to Maine. Needless to say, he was quite the trooper! The change of environment was a challenge to us all as we all came down with colds, but being with family and friends was well worth it.
The experience was incredibly bitter-sweet, as we said goodbye to the man that brought John life, when just two months ago we welcomed to the world the best thing that has ever happened to us! Our only regret is that John's dad was never able to meet and hold Caleb, but at least he left us knowing that Caleb was here & seeing him in pictures.
Although there were many tears throughout the week, there was also a lot of laughter and opportunity for us to visit with so much family. Caleb spent lots of time with Grammie Peggy and with Great-Grammie Helmi. He also was very excited about meeting his cousin Kylee for the 1st time!
The funeral took place on Thursday, and then Friday we packed up with John's brother Dave and sister Angela, along with Peggy and went up to their camp on the water. It has been in their family since the early 1900's and was a place the kids all grew up at with their father. LOTS of memories!!! The day was amazing & while we did some clean-up before the winter comes, we also sat around the fire pit and relaxed, had lunch, and told more stories & enjoyed each other's company. What an awesome day!
Fianlly, just before we left Maine, we had the opportunity to spend some time with John's mother's parents. Caleb was able to meet & take pictures with is Great-Grandpa John and Great-Grandma Pauline while we ate a YUMMY Maine lobster lunch at Aunt Betty's.
All in all, the emotional week reminded us how important our family and friends are to us. Thanks to everyone for all of the kind thoughts & prayers!
It will be hard not having him here with us in person, but we know that Grampie is looking down on Caleb now & will be with him forever.
